Oxford County Public Health will submit special report to the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Public Health is voicing their opinion to the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, regarding a recent report around the public health system.
In the report titled "Public Health within and Integrated System" an expert panel provides some recommendations on how the Ministry should move forward with the public health system in the future.
Director of Public Health and Emergency Services Lynn Beath says there would be some pretty big changes if the suggestions get the green light.
"There would be a change from having 36 health units to having 14 health units in the province and that the health unit boundaries would align more closely with the LHIN boundaries across the province."
If the Ministry decides to move forwards with this recommendation, Oxford County Public Health would merge with the Middlesex-London Health Unit, Elgin St. Thomas Health Unit, Perth
District Health Unit, Huron County Health Unit and the Grey Bruce Health Unit.
Beath explains how a larger health system could impact communities.
"The larger your health unit area gets and the more municipalities that are involved, the less local impact you have on the governance and the oversight of your services. It really dilutes that ability for the local voice to influence the services being delivered in their area."
Oxford Public Health is submitting their own report to the Ministry, pointing out that size has not impacted their ability to meet the community's needs throughout the years.
