Oxford County Council approved 27 new Community Safety Zones yesterday including five in Woodstock, two in Ingersoll, and three in Norwich Township.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County will have 27 new Community Safety Zones by the end of the year.
Council approved the new zones last night and Warden Marcus Ryan says they're being proactive.
"Seven of these zones that have been identified are cases where the accident history doesn't warrant there being a safety zone there, but Public Works staff identified that there is the potential for an accident there so let's be proactive and do this. I think that is the right way to do it."
A Community Safety Zone has more signage, and drivers could face increased fines if they're caught breaking the law. They're supposed to improve traffic and pedestrian safety in areas with a potential for crashes. A lot of the new zones are in areas with schools, rec centres, libraries, and parks.
The new zones are located all throughout Oxford County including five in Woodstock, two in Ingersoll, and three in Norwich Township. Ryan says one will be located in the west end of Harrington, right in front of a park and community hall.
"As with all of these traffic calming exercises that we do, we collect data for a year to see if they're working or not and if we need to do more. That has been the case in Harrington where things have been tried and they've helped but not a whole lot so we're trying something else."
You can view the 28 Community Safety Zones that were proposed to Oxford County Council online here. Council decided to delay the proposed zone for Tillsonburg, because the town is currently working on a new Master Transportation Strategy.
