We're losing forest land in Oxford County, and we're not planting enough trees to stop it.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford's forest cover has been on a downhill slide throughout the years, and we're not doing enough to put a stop to it.
Cathy Quinlan is a Terrestrial Biologist with the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority. She says they were able to take a close look at the shape of their woodlands, thanks to GIS mapping technology.
"From 2000 to 2010, we've lost 800 hectares of forest cover in the entirety of the Upper Thames Watershed in those ten years. That represents about a two percent loss in forest cover. Oxford County's portion is about 200 hectares of loss."
The UTRCA's forestry programs tried to revive about 324 hectares of land from 2001 to 2010.
Quinlan says something more needs to be done.
"We want to be aware of how we're doing. We want to ramp up out protection and reforestation efforts if we're going to keep the status quo and hopefully to grow our forest cover."
Quinlan presented a delegation to Oxford County Council on Wednesday, and they received it as information.
