People around the world are speaking up on social media as they mark World Cancer Day.
Manager of the Oxford Community Office of the Canadian Cancer Society Janice Cunningham encourages everyone to join in on World Cancer Day. "We are calling on everybody to be part of that day, to join the #TalkingHands campaign, and to mark World Cancer Day and spread the 'We Can, I Can' which is also a hashtag inspirational message. So we really want people to be out there using their social media and helping us to promote this message."
"In this whole 'We Can, I Can,' concept, we're really encouraging people to take on an interest and be a part of making the changes and moving our cancer movement and uniting the world against cancer," Cunningham says. "We're encouraging people to get involved and to become a volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society." The Oxford branch is currently looking for volunteers to help with the upcoming daffodil campaign.
Cunningham says the work they do at the Canadian Cancer Society reaches a wide range of people in Oxford, whether you are fighting a personal battle with the disease or you are close to someone else who is. "The research that we fund - it helps everyone. It has changed the treatments, changed how we look at cancer, and what we're going about it. We've made a difference because of the support of the Oxford County community in funding research and funding our support programs that helps them with their diagnosis, understanding the information that we can provide."
