Oxford Remember's Oxford's Own Still Going Strong

Next year's lineup of events for Oxford Remembers Oxford's Own should be out in early December.

Over 40 events have taken place in Oxford County since last June to commemorate the 100 anniversary of the first world war.

Local museums in the County have come together to create Oxford Remembers Oxford's Own by hosting 100 events over the course of four years. Over 20 events happened across the county this year and they plan on announcing next year's events in early December. Curator of the Annandale National Historic Site in Tillsonburg Patricia Phelps tells Heart FM they had some really memorable events in 2015.

"I think all of our events we have been hosting have had attendance and have been good, at Annandale one of the events that sticks out happened in January where we had a reading of a first world war diary."

Phelps says the goal is to do 20 events each year and already they have reached about 50. She notes the First World War was a huge moment in Canadian history.

"Remembering the veterans and the importance of Remembrance Day is very important, the freedoms we have now are because of those men and women who sacrificed what they did both on the home front and overseas. When it comes to the First World War, because there are no surviving veterans, it is often referred to as the forgotten war, yet it was an incredibly important war and had a huge impact on Canada. It gave us a global recognition of who and what we were as a country, but not only that it was also truly an event that every little hamlet, village, town, city and big city was affected by this war."
