George Papadakos would like to run 23 marathons in 31 days in order to raise money for the Alzheimer Society Southwest Partners.
TILLSONBURG - Miles for Memories has returned for another January of running in Tillsonburg.
The fundraiser for the Alzheimer Society of Oxford spans the whole month and this year, the heart and soul of the campaign George Papadakos plans to run 23 marathons in 31 days.
Papadakos said he would run 31 marathons in 31 days back in 2021 when he started the fundraiser, but after nine consecutive days of running 42 kilometres, he suffered a serious tendinosis in his achilles that halted his progress.
When the community got word of his injury, they stepped up in a huge way by walking and running for him, as well as helping raise over $41000.
Papadakos has run at least three marathons so far and believes he will have five or six done by the end of the week. He explains what made him want to run for Alzheimer's in the first place.
"[I just wanted] to bring awareness to a disease that's growing in numbers. It's such a debilitating disease, I don't think people truly understand the effects it has on the person and his or her caregivers as well. The family really takes a big toll."
Papadakos added that he has always advocated for Alzheimer's Society since his wife lost her grandmother and her aunt to the disease.
