A new campaign from the Canadian Cancer Society is asking people to ditch the drink for the month of February.
OXFORD COUNTY - The Canadian Cancer Society is asking residents to rethink drinking alcoholic beverages for the month of February.
Manger of the Oxford County Community Office for the Canadian Cancer Society Janice Cunningham tells Heart FM about the Dry Feb Fundraiser:
"It's to raise awareness about the link between cancer and alcohol and promote the idea that we can modify our alcohol consumption to reduce our cancer risk and to raise funds."
Cunningham also says that becoming involved in the Dry Feb Fundraiser is easy.
"We are encouraging people to take part. It's very simple and easy to do - people can register at dryfeb.ca and collect donations from your friends and family."
A recent survey showed that only 28% of Ontario residents know of the links between cancer and alcohol. Booze is linked to oral cancer and cancers of the oesophagus, breast, colorectal, liver, and larynx. Cunningham explains what the recommended alcohol consumption is for those who are not sobering up for February;
"We know for women it is suggested they have less than one drink per day as the recommended amount. For men it's less than two drinks per day and that is what moderate consumption is. Anything more than that can increase that risk of developing cancer."
