Over 200 people have signed a petition to ban graphic images in the Friendly City.
WOODSTOCK - A mother from Woodstock is hoping to ban graphic images in the Friendly City.
Kate Leatherbarrow started her petition after seeing a picture of an aborted fetus on Dundas Street while she was out with her two small children.
"We were greeted at the intersection of Highway 59 and Dundas and their was a man holding a pro life sign but it was a very graphic image of an aborted fetus. Unfortunately my 3 year old son was very confused and if anyone has sat at that intersection going towards Devonshire, they know that is a very long red light. It posed a lot of questions for me because it made me feel very uncomfortable, it made me feel like my privacy was invaded because I don't think a 3 year old should be subjected to that imagery or even discussing abortion."
The petition asks the city to create a bylaw that would prevent graphic images from being displayed publicly. She says this isn't about free speech.
"Regardless of whatever organization you are with, we have to have restrictions and we have to have protections in place, you can't just shove any type of material in my face and call it free speech."
Right now they have over 200 signatures, you can sign the petition at Beantown Coffee in downtown Woodstock. They are hoping to have this item on the agenda for the next city council meeting on the 14th.
