Tillsonburg council pushed the decision until May 27th.
TILLSONBURG - The name of a skate park in Tillsonburg is up for debate. At Tillsonburg's council meeting a request come forward to honour Kolin Smith, a member of the planning committee who lost his life in a car crash at the end of December last year. Director of Recreation of Parks and Culture for the Town of Tillsonburg, Rick Cox, knows the community is behind the decision, it is now up to council to make the final say.
"There was a request that came to council that a skate park be named after a local skateboard enthusiast. Council asked that the staff do some homework, the 27th of May was given as the scheduled date to go back to council, at that point we should be able to give a recommendation as to how to do this."
Cox knows it will be a lengthy process before he has to reappear before council by the end of May, "what I need to is come back to council with a procedure. The homework is for me to check with other communities who have existing procedures and pick, and choose the best of those to bring and use in Tillsonburg."
Residents of Tillsonburg flocked to council hopeful that the skate park would be renamed only to be disappointed after council needed more time and information before a decision could be finalized. Cox, never met Kolin, but that is not going stop him from doing his homework in an attempt to honour one of the instrumental members who helped see this project finalized.
"He used the park a lot, he was part of the group of young people involved with the move to establish one, to provide input on the design, on how it works, and how it looks. We had money from a number of other places to be fair we want to just make sure that we checked to make sure there aren't any objections."
Over 650 people have signed a petition in hopes that council will rename the park before the beginning of summer.
