A couple of schools in Oxford County will be taking part in a new program that encourages kids to get more active.
OXFORD - Student Transportation Services is looking to bring their Pilot Project, the Active School Travel Program to Oxford County this Spring.
The goal of the program is to get more kids walking, biking and taking other modes of transportation to school, other than vehicles. Some benefits of this program include: better safety in school zones through decreased traffic congestion and an overall positive environmental impact.
Schools are often very busy traffic zones in the morning, with cars coming and going there is increased danger to the kids. The CAO of SouthWestern Ontario Student Transportation Services Maureen Cosyn Heath has already seen the program help with traffic congestion.
"Many areas have a small road in front of their school that gets quite congested during pick up and drop off. Getting the kids out of cars and walking to school is definitely having a positive impact on that."
Heath was also happy to share the other benefits of the program.
"Of course there is the added safety of having fewer cars on the road but the program also provides kids with improved physical and mental health and increased academic success."
As Interest in active travel continues to grow, the School Travel Planners look forward to adding additional school sites later this spring. Schools interested in the program can get in touch with Student Transportation Services to be added to the list of potential sites.
