Planners Don't Support New Drive-Thru Beer Store in Woodstock

The Beer Store wants to build a new drive-thru retail outlet in Woodstock, but city planners aren't raising their glasses to the move. City Council heard about the plans at last night's planning meeting as The Beer Store wants to build a new store at the former Sunoco Station site at Dundas and Clarke. The Beer Store has been looking to move away from it's Dundas and Springbank location because of a cramped parking lot. But as Mayor Pat Sobeski tells Heart FM, possible future road expansion has planners recommending council turn their plans down. "While The Beer Store likes the site...one of the requirements is to have a road allowance along Clarke St. and along Dundas, should there every be any future expansion...you have to take allowance (30 meters) for that and that's caused some of the variances." Sobeski says council has to look at the broader picture, and maybe help a company that wants to develop a site that's been sitting vacant. "Council could take a broader look at it and say 'Well, this has been a vacant site for 5-years. Here's a company that's coming along and is prepared to pay the remediation costs for the environmental cleanup that's needed.' So council has to take a look at the bigger picture." Sobeski joked that council could have a "spirited debate" on the issue Thursday night.
