Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the Catholic Church needs to accept responsibility for its role in Canada's residential schools.
The PM says he's "deeply disappointed" by the stance the Church has taken both now and in the past several years.
From 1831 to 1996, about 150,000 children were forced from their homes by the Canadian residential school system, with many being subjected to rape, abuse and malnutrition.
Trudeau notes that in 2017, he asked the Pope to consider issuing an apology for the role the Church played, but it was never made.
He's urging Catholics across Canada to speak about the issue with bishops and cardinals.
This comes after the recent discovery of the remains of 215 children at a former residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia.
The story has sparked grief and outrage throughout the country, with pressure mounting on the federal government to launch an investigation into more possible school burial sites.
