Police Advise Public To Stay Away From Water

OPP are advising people stay away from bodies of water in the county at this time of year.

OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County OPP are warning the public to stay away from the water this time of year.

As the mercury starts to drop again, ice will soon form again, however it likely won't be thick enough to walk on or play on. Constable Lisa Naranscik tells Heart FM they are advising everyone to just avoid all of the watercourses in the County right now.

"We are also getting flooding warnings, so we have the melted ice and we are getting the flooding warnings, so you can guarantee the ice is not going to be safe and the waterways, once we get the flooding warnings starts to flow and the water will be moving very fast."

Naranscik adds no ice is ever 100 percent safe and it is going to take a long time for the ice to regain it's thickness to make it safe for crossing. She adds police to do have a common sense checklist you should use before venturing on the ice.

- Check ice thickness and quality before riding onto any frozen waterway.

- Only travel where ice is already well-tracked and others are present, and where ice roads and fishing huts are in place.

- Be mindful that ice conditions can vary from day-to-day, from hour-to-hour and from one location to the next.

- Never travel on ice alone, at night or while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

- Avoid slushy or untracked ice or ice near moving water or dock bubblers.

- Watch out for obstacles like rocks, stumps, docks, ice roads and fishing huts.

- Wear a buoyant snowmobile suit and carry ice picks.

- Do not travel on ice for several days after any mild temperatures and stay off the ice altogether as soon as spring temperatures stay at or above 0°C.
