The OPP are asking metal recyclers to give them a call if you have people coming by with large amounts of catalytic converters.
WEST REGION - Police departments across Southwestern Ontario have noticed a rise in thefts of catalytic converters.
West Region OPP Acting Sergeant Ed Sanchuk says it's becoming a real problem.
"We have had several instances of catalytic converters being stolen off of used and new vehicles. It's happening on private property and it's happening on car dealership lots."
Police are asking everyone to be on the lookout for suspicious activity, especially if you see people hanging our car lots late at night. Sanchuk says they also want metal producers to give them a call if they suspect something is fishy.
"For all our metal recyclers out there as well, to contact us as well if they have individuals showing up at their places of work with large amounts of catalytic converters. So to our metal recyclers, please give us a call if you see this type of activity."
It doesn't take long to remove a catalytic converter and it can be lucrative for the thieves. Waterloo Regional Police have put out a similar warning after rash of catalytic convert thefts from North Dumfries Township.
