Pope Francis Apologizes for Residential Schools

During a meeting with First Nations, Inuit and Metis delegates this morning, Pope Francis apologized for the Roman Catholic Church's role in residential schools.

VATICAN - Pope Francis has apologized for the Roman Catholic Church's role in residential schools.

The Pope has been meeting with First Nations, Inuit and Metis delegates at the Vatican over the past few days. They met one last time this morning in order to share spiritual practices. About 190 people were there, including delegates, family and supporters.

The Pope also promised to visit Canada some day. A date has not been set yet, but the delegates say it could be as soon as this summer.

About 150,000 Indigenous children were forced to attend residential schools in Canada and more than 60 percent of them were run by the Catholic Church.
