Poppy Campaign Starts

Poppy Campaigns are up and running until Remembrance Day

OXFORD COUNTY - Poppy campaign donations are at work at Woodstock Collegiate Institute.

Donations from the Royal Canadian Legion poppy campaigns help to provide bursaries to highschool students entering post-secondary education.

Wednesday Mark Macgregor, a first year Western University student recieved a bursary in amount of $1,000. Macgregor was presented with the bursary along with his highschool diploma at his convocation at Woodstock Collegiate Institute. The bursaries are typically given to two students per school in four highschools across the county. The bursaries are just one way the Poppy campaign donations are used.

The donations are also put towards assisting homeless veterans, veterans in need of medical and financial assistance and dependents of veterans.

The Poppy campaign will begin on Halloween and finish on Remembrance Day, November 11th.

Poppy campaign co-chair Mike Pritchard said around 300 boxes are being distributed at small businesses within the county. Pritchard says poppy donation boxes will be available at, "small outlets through town, Walmart, Tim Hortons, people out at the farmers market on Saturday morning, Foodland, Giant Tiger..."

"If you have business over at the legion or you want to drop by there is a box out there if people wish to donate and recieve a poppy it will be in the main office," added Pritchard.

Poppies were made available at the Woodstock Vigil held this past weekend honouring the two Canadian soldiers killed in separate attacks.
