Protect Yourself from Cold and Flu Season

Oxford County Public Health offers tips to keep your family healthy over the next few months

OXFORD COUNTY - The cold and flu bugs are rearing their head in Oxford County, and public health has a few ways to protect yourself.

Public Health Nurse Leslie Leach says a little extra cleaning around the house might help keep the family healthy. "Wiping down phones, remotes, doorknobs, wiping down tables. Sharing utensils and straws are just really bad ideas. And washing your dishes regularly with hot soapy water and if you use tissues at home throw them away after once use so they don't end up on our hands and back out into the community."

And of course washing your hands remains an excellent line of defence according to Leach. "Almost all infections that we'll get this winter we'll have given ourselves from our own hands because germs lives on doorknobs for days, on tissues for hours, and on our hands for several minutes. Common habits like rubbing our eyes, our nose, and our mouths can make us sick."

Many people feel the need to soldier on when they're feeling sick, but Leach says that's not the best thing to do. "Really we want to encourage people to stay home when they're sick. We can't stress that enough. No one wants to be the person who brings an illness to a job or the classroom and starts the chain reaction of getting all your coworkers or classmates sick. So stay home, take care of yourself until you've had a full day of feeling well and without fever."
