The province will not approve new consumption treatment sites until it completes a review.
ONTARIO - The Ford Government will not be approving new consumption treatment sites for the time being
A review was launched over the summer after a 44-year-old woman was shot and killed close to a site in the east end of Toronto. Michael Tibollo, the associate minister of mental health and addictions, says no new sites will be approved until this review is completed.
He says everything will be on the table, including potential locations. He hopes it will find ways to improve the relationship between the host communities and the people who use the sites.
Tibollo also said the government has no plans to close the 17 existing locations in the province.
Consumption treatment sites have been a hot topic in the City of Woodstock lately, after Southwestern Public Health released a report that recommended a site open in the Friendly City. The City held a meeting to gather public input on Tuesday September 26th, which lasted close to four hours and included over 20 delegations.
During yesterday's Woodstock City Council meeting, Councillor Mark Schadenburg brought forward a notice of motion asking his fellow councillors to vote against a consumption treatment site opening in the Friendly City. The matter will now be up for discussion at their next meeting on October 19th.
