The Digital Platform Workers' Act will call for $15 minimum wage for app-based gig workers.
ONTARIO - The Ford Government is set to introduce new legislation today, which will affect Uber drivers, Lyft drivers and other app-based gig workers in the province.
Multiple media outlets are reporting that the Digital Platform Workers' Act will guarantee $15 minimum wage for these workers, on top of whatever they make for tips. It will give them a recurring pay period and a pay day. Platform operators also won't be able to withhold tips from them.
The Ford Government increased minimum wage to $15 per hour back in January, but app-based gig workers were not included.
Premier Doug Ford is set to make an announcement at 11:00 a.m. today and he will be joined by Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development Monte McNaughton.
