The jury at Bonita Purtill's trial heard both vehicles involved in the crash that killed 4-month-old Alex Fleming had no mechanical issues. Jeffery Masters, a certified "Class A" mechanic testified. He inspected both vehicles following the crash. The Silverado pickup was driven by Purtill, while the Fleming family was in a Ford Fusion. Masters told the court both vehicles would have passed a safety - "no problem at all". He said the Silverado had excellent tires, both vehicles had 80-90 per cent of their brake pads left, and steering components were fully functional. The evidence is meant to show mechanical issues played no role in the crash that killed baby Alex. Also testifying was Constable David Weber with Waterloo Regional Police. He's a Collision Data Retrieval Analyst and studied info from the black boxes of both vehicles. He found the Silverado was travelling at 52km/h and said there was "no brake application at any point in time before the collision".
