Rail Safety Week is recognized nationwide and will take place from April 25th to May 1st
WOODSTOCK- Rail Safety Week will be taking place during the last week of April. Woodstock City Councillor Sandra Talbot explains the purpose of the week.
"It's to bring awareness to the railways. I think there's been lot's of accidents lately involving pedestrians and vehicles where there's no gated railroad crossings. So it's to bring awareness to it so people are more observant and watching so they don't get caught.
Talbot tells us why Rail Safety Week is a big deal.
"Well I think it's important anywhere you have railways going through your community. Most of ours are gated that I can think of, but I am sure there are the odd ones and some people don't realize the significance when the gates are down to stop and even if they can't see the train coming I'm pretty sure there is one there."
Talbot adds rail safety awareness can help avoid preventable collisions. On April 4th two Strathroy women were killed when their car was struck by a train crossing in Southwest Middlesex.
Rail Safety Week is recognized nationwide and will take place from April 25th to May 1st. It was created by Operation Lifesaver, a partnership with the goal of raising rail safety awareness in communities.
