With a week left the excitement is building for Relay for Life. A special BBQ fundraiser returns to Woodstock today.
WOODSTOCK - Relay for Life is coming back to Woodstock at College Ave Secondary School.
Participants will walk around the track at CASS for 6 hours on Friday June 9th from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Manager of the local cancer society Janice Cunningham says the opening ceremonies are always emotional with the Survivors' Lap.
"You will see a sea of yellow t-shirts that we give our survivors and they walk around the track for the first lap of the event for the night and we stand around the edges of the track and cheer on our survivors. That is what we are here for - we want to create more survivors."
Cunningham says they also have all kinds of fun events planned for the Relay this year.
"We have all kinds of activities, entertainment, and live music. Our first lap after the Survivors' Lap this year is the Canada 150 Lap, where we are encouraging everyone to wear their red and white and show their patriotism to our country and then from there it just continues to have fun all night long. This year we are bringing, what I have been calling hamster balls to the Relay. We have these great big huge, hamster-soccer balls kind of things that you can wear and have some fun with. At 10 pm we have the always moving Luminary Ceremony, where our luminaries that are paper bags around the track are lit. The luminaries are placed around the track in memory of people who have lost their lives to cancer."
Cunningham is expecting a good turnout as this is the only Relay for Life event in Oxford County this year. You still have time to sign up a team for the event online here.
Today Woodstock Print and Litho is having a BBQ for the event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with all of the proceeds going to the cause. Stop by their office at 16 Springbank Ave for the BBQ.
