BRANT COUNTY - Brant County OPP are warning the public about a phone scam, where the caller is pretending to work for the RCMP.
On Wednesday morning, police responded to a complaint on King Street. A resident had gotten a call from someone claiming to be a police officer with the RCMP. They told the person they were being investigated and a warrant was out for their arrest.
The scammer then asked for the last four numbers of their social insurance number, along with their email and home address and banking information.
The victim became suspicious at which time the caller immediately ended the conversation. Detachment Commander, Inspector Lisa Anderson says the OPP
"The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) County of Brant detachment continues to receive reports from residents stating they have been or attempted to be defrauded. Don't be a victim. Fraud is a multi-billion dollar enterprise that will only stop when the scammers stop getting money, banking information or personal information." - Inspector Lisa Anderson, Detachment Commander, County of Brant OPP.
The OPP is urging all residents to hang up the phone if they receive a call from someone claiming that they are a police officer and are asking for any personal information. Police Services will NOT call and inquire about any personal/financial information or ask for your Social Insurance Number. If you or someone you know suspect they've been a victim of a fraud, contact your local police service. You can also file a complaint through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
Members of the County of Brant OPP are continuing to investigate and is seeking the public's assistance with this investigation. If anyone has any information they are being asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
