Rehoboth Enters Payment Agreement with Oxford

Oxford County will be providing Rehoboth Christian School with an interest free loan until the Development Charges Act is revisited in 2019.

NORWICH - Oxford County has entered into a deferred payment agreement with Rehoboth Christian School in Norwich.

The private school was hoping to build on a new gymnasium for their JK to Grade 12 students by the fall, but they were faced with $89,500 in development charges.

If Emily Stowe Public School were to build on the same addition, they would not have to pay the charges because they are publicly funded. Norwich Mayor Larry Martin believes both schools should be treated equally.

"The way I look at it is a school, is a school, is a school. If one is exempt they all should be or none should be; one or the other."

Martin tells Heart FM about the agreement that was made.

"It was basically an interest free loan to offset those charges until such time as they can review the development charges bylaw. At that time depending on the outcome of the interview, they may or not still be exempted depends on what they decide; if they decide to include the private schools in with the public schools as well under the Development Charges Act."

The Development Charges Act will be revisited in 2019.
