Over 500 people took part in 16th annual Relay for Life in Woodstock on Saturday night
WOODSTOCK - Over 500 people took part in 16th annual Relay for Life in Woodstock on Saturday night.
48 teams participated this year and together they raised nearly $170,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. Fundraising Specialist Liz Wismer-Van Meer says they couldn't have done it without their volunteers "huge number of volunteers actually which is what makes our event so successful, the amount of volunteers who come out and help us, we had almost 200 volunteers who helped us on Saturday night from the set up to the take down at the end of the night.
Wismer-Van Meer says overall people really seemed to like the change this year moving to six hour event, however they did have a few people who said they preferred the 12 hour marathon. Everyone did have a great time and the entertainment was amazing with the live acts, up beat music and it was really cool to see the Harvard planes fly by.
They had over 100 survivors kick things off this year with the always emotional survivors lap. The Canadian Cancer Society had set out a fundraising goal of $250,000 this year. Wismer-Van Meer says while they didn't reach that lofty goal it was still amazing to raise almost $170,000 and they expect that number will rise as they still have a few more donations coming into the society.
Up next for the Canadian Cancer Society is the Relay for Life in Ingersoll this Friday at IDCI from 6 p.m to midnight.
