Residents at peopleCare in Tavistock are Getting Vaccinated Today

Around 40 residents at peopleCare in Tavistock will be getting vaccinated today as the Health Unit has set up a mobile clinic outside the LTC home.

TAVISTOCK - Residents at PeopleCare in Tavistock are getting their first dose of the Pfizer BioNtech vaccine today.

The mobile vaccination unit is currently at the Long Term Care home and residents are getting their shot. Several staff members have already been vaccinated at the site in London.

An outbreak was declared at the long term care home last month and since then a total of 39 residents have tested positive for COVID-19 and 32 staff members. A total of 5 residents have passed away with the virus and 20 resident cases are now resolved and they have not had a new resident case since January 7th. The home currently has 74 resents total.

Today Southwestern Public Health has set up a mobile clinic at the home and they will be working to vaccinate around 40 residents this afternoon.

VP of Quality Research and Strategic Partnerships and peopleCare’s COVID incident management lead Jenn Killing says the goal right now is to get as many residents vaccinated as possible.

"Getting as many residents, staff and family caregivers vaccinated as soon as possible is peopleCare’s most urgent priority. We thank Public Health for their partnership and support throughout the pandemic and for prioritizing our residents for this much-needed vaccines. It is wonderful to work alongside their team today to vaccinate our residents in the comfort of their own home, surrounded by people who care about and for them."

Tavistock was prioritized for the limited vaccines because of the current outbreak.

In an email exchange with Heart FM, the Long Term Care Home did want to offer the deepest sympathies with every family member who has lost a loved one during this outbreak. Stating "we supported these families and their loved one through end-of-life care and decisions, hand-in-hand with our Medical Director. We have also been so grateful for the support from our families and the community!"

Staff in Tavistock continue to work with Public Health and are following their guidance as they try to navigate through this outbreak.
