Scam Alert

Woodstock Police are warning the public about a new scam making the rounds in Woodstock.

WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police are on the trail of a new scammer - this one pretending to be the police themselves.

Media relations officer and Woodstock Police Constable Nikki VanLeeuwan says it's a gutsy move by these scammers. "We received a call from a person who received a telephone call and on the other end of the line the person was asking for funds to support Woodstock Police Association Cops and Kids fishing derby. So they contacted police and we confirmed immediately that wasn't the case."

"We never would do that. If you get a call from someone claiming to be from the Woodstock Police Service or someone from our Association then hang up the phone immediately."

Scams seem to be everywhere these days, and Constable VanLeeuwan says people really need to be savvy and know to always be suspicious if people are asking for money. "It's a billion dollar business. And the scammers are successful in getting funds. So unfortunately I can't see this type of fraud ending ending time soon. So it's really important that we're diligent in getting the message out, and that people protect themselves.
