Shortage of Licensed Home Child Care Providers in Oxford County

Oxford Community Child Care is encouraging more people out there to become licensed child care providers from the comfort of their own homes.

OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford Community Child Care is looking to support more licensed home child care providers in the County.

It's currently supporting seven providers, but it has the capacity to support up to 50.

Human Services Manger Lynda Bartlett says there's a shortage of licensed child care providers in the County right now and you don't need to be a licensed Early Childhood Educator in order to apply.

"It's a real challenge to be able to open up more licensed child care spaces when we don't have enough registered Early Childhood Educators to be able to staff them."

You do need to have first aid and CPR training, and pass a home inspection and criminal record check.

Bartlett says licensed providers are eligible for financial assistance.

"The Province of Ontario through the Ministry of Education offers a Home Child Care Enhancement Grant and that provides some extra funding to those that are providing licensed child care in their home."

Oxford Community Child Care will also offers additional assistance through support and education.

Bartlett says OCCC also collects the child care payments from parents and guardians and that money is later sent to the licensed provider. The provider will always get paid through OCCC, regardless if the parent or guardian has paid for their child care yet.

Those who are interested in becoming a licensed home child care provider can find more information online here.
