The Oxford County Pride Committee was happy to unveil a brand new rainbow crosswalk in front of Museum Square in Woodstock.
WOODSTOCK - The S2LGBTQAI+ community in Oxford County is celebrating today, with a brand new rainbow crosswalk in front of Museum Square in Woodstock.
President of the Oxford County Pride Committee Tami Murray says they have been working on this project for a couple of years.
"We did get approval from City Council after a presentation I did a couple of years ago before COVID and unfortunately, COVID-19 kind of impeded that a little bit."
The crosswalk cost about $2,000, which was paid for through a Community Futures Oxford grant and a $500 donation from the Rainbow Optimist Club. The Pride Committee will be responsible for the upkeep of the crosswalk.
Murray explains why they felt this was important to have in Woodstock and Oxford County.
"A big part of our work is advocacy and inclusion and safety for all and one of the biggest things that we need or I think that sends a clear message to our community is visuals and optics. I think this sends a message to Oxford County that we are inclusive, that we are diverse, that we are welcoming and that we identify and recognize the S2LGBTQAI+ community as a part of Oxford County."
