It's Snowmobile Safety Week and the Oxford OPP has some reminders for snowmobile operators before they hit the trails.
OXFORD COUNTY - Snow has finally hit the ground in Oxford County, so lots of people might be bringing out their snowmobiles to go for a ride.
This also happens to be Snowmobile Safety Week, and Constable Randi Crawford with the Oxford OPP has this message to share.
"Driving too fast for the conditions, impaired driving, and driving on frozen waterways have been the leading causes of snowmobile fatalities in the province."
Crawford adds, that staying on approved trails, wearing the proper equipment, and having a safety kit with you will go a long way in helping if any issues arise.
She speaks to what is needed to operate a snowmobile.
"You can drive a snowmobile if you have a valid Ontario Drivers License in any class. If you do not have a Driver's License and you are 12 years of age or older, a valid motorized snow vehicle operator's license will allow you to drive on trails established and maintained by a recreational organization."
Crawford adds that sharing the road is important when a motorist sees a snowmobile, and if everyone does their part and follows the rules of the road, it should be a safe winter season.
Did you know? Driving off the trail could be trespassing. It not only risks damage to planted winter crops, it jeopardizes future use of the property for snowmobile operators. #SnowmobileSafetyWeek @GoSnowmobiling #SouthBruceOPP ^km pic.twitter.com/xIxbyNKXQ6
