Mehdi Olad is looking to educate the public about some of the local wildlife in Oxford County through the Southern Ontario Backyard YouTube page.
WOODSTOCK - A local Woodstonian is sharing his love of nature through the Southern Ontario Backyard YouTube channel.
Mehdi Olad set up trail cameras on his forest property just outside the Friendly City and he has been sharing his findings online. He started the YouTube page with his wife about a year ago with two goals in mind.
"To document all of the animals that we have at different times of the year and their numbers and to share our passion for the outdoors and nature hoping to inspire others, especially kids, to get outdoors and enjoy nature."
He says lots of parents have been showing their kids these videos, so they can learn more about some of the wildlife in our area.
Olad has learned a lot about local wildlife every since he started the page. He was also very surprised to find a coywolf, a cross between an Algonquin wolf and a coyote, earlier this year.
"The animal's face and shoulders are much broader and it's basically bigger in every way with different markings. I've never seen anything like that before, let alone expected see an animal like that this far south in a mostly agricultural area."
After showing the video to his local conservation officer, Mehdi discovered that it was a very rare find indeed.
"He has only see a couple in between Guelph and Woodstock in the last five to ten years so he was pretty happy to see that."
The Southern Ontario Backyard YouTube page currently has 87 subscribers and you can check it out online here.
