Serious side affects to the COVID-19 vaccine are very rare. The most common side affects are fatigue, injection site pain, headache, muscle or joint pain and chills or a fever.
OXFORD COUNTY - As more and more people get ready to roll up their sleeves to be vaccinated, Southwestern Public Health is providing information on potential side effects.
Similar to any vaccine or medication, side effects are common, not every will experience them and most are minor and short lived. The most frequent side affects are fatigue, injection site pain, headache, muscle or joint pain and chills or a fever.
Rare but more severe side affects include hives, swelling of the face, tongue or throat and difficulty breathing.
According to the Health Unit the serious side effects such as severe allergic reactions like anaphylaxis are very rare. For context, if all 38 million Canadians were to be immunized for COVID-19, it would result in 76 to 95 people across Canada having a serious anaphylactic reaction. Compare that to a penicillin antibiotic given to all Canadians which would result in about 3,800 to 15,000 reactions statistically.
More information on vaccine side affects can be on the Health Canada web site or the Ontario Health web site.
