Woodstock Fire pilot program getting kids talking about fire safety
WOODSTOCK - Students at St Michael's School in Woodstock got a big thank you from the Woodstock Fire Department.
Today marked the wrap up on the inaugural Spark's Adventure campaign which was piloted at the school this year.
Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says the program was all about getting kids talking to their families about fire safety.
"All the junior and senior kindergartens were able to take home a Sparky doll in a backpack with a special Sparky's ABC DVD and the kids taught their parents about fire safety and they built a fire safety plan as part of their educational programming."
Woods says the program is a lot of fun for the kids.
"Kids get really excited when it's their turn to take Sparky home for the weekend and they can show their family and friends and they take pictures of what Sparky did with them. Some go to hockey games, some go to the movies, some have camp outs in their livingrooms and they send us the pictures and it's really fun for the kids."
Woods says it also helps that kids are always excited to tell their parents what they did in school that day.
"They do take it home and they get parents thinking about it. You know, in this day and age we have had fires here in Woodstock and you're reading about fires in the outlining cities where kids maybe haven't made it out or there has been some sort of injury because of it, and it is preventable. If kids know what to do when the fire alarm goes off and they do it automatically, we can help save lives."
During the wrap up this morning, the students got their photo taken with Sparky, they were able to tour the fire truck and squirt some water and were also treated to a pizza lunch.
Woods says there are plans to bring the program to other local schools next year.
