Liz Dommasch will share some of the stories that will be included in Growing Stronger Together: A Celebration of Oxford County's Past.
INGERSOLL - A new publication is in the works, all about Oxford County's 175th anniversary since incorporation.
It's called Growing Stronger Together: A Celebration of Oxford County's Past. Archivist Liz Dommasch is hoping to have copies available for purchase sometime next month, but those who are interested can attend the upcoming Local History Speaker Series event in the meantime.
Dommasch will be sharing some of the stories from the book, including this one from the 1950s.
"Our County Council pulled together a barbershop quartet and competed against a number of area county's as well. We were back to back winners and we actually have the trophy here in the archives!"
She also has this interesting story about Aimee Semple McPherson, someone from Salford who went on to become an Evangelist speaker and founder of Foursquare Church in Los Angeles, California.
"She was actually a winner of a popularity contest put out by the Sentinel Review for Dereham Township. Each Township had their own winner and the winners actually went on a free trip to Buffalo or Quebec."
Dommasch will share other stories from the book and answer some questions in the Ingersoll Council Chambers this Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. It's free to attend and there's no registration required, unless you are planning on tuning in virtually. If that's the case, you can call the Tillsonburg library at 519-842-5571 or the Ingersoll library at 519-485-2505. You can also register online here.
The Local History Speaker Series is co-organized by Oxford County Library and Oxford County Archives.
