Spring Bike Safety

Now that more cyclists are hitting the streets, OPP want to remind them of some of the rules.

Lots of cyclists are starting to break out their bikes for the spring season.

Drivers should be on the lookout for bikes and to share the road. OPP want to make sure cyclists are following the rules as well.

Before they head out they MUST make sure their bike is working properly. The breaks have to be fully functional, the reflectors have to be intact and you must have a light installed if you are riding your bike between the half hour before sunset and the half hour after sunrise. Each bike must be equipped with some sort of signalling device like a bell or a horn.

Cyclists have to make sure they signal for turns and stops and obey all road signs and traffic lights.

If you are out riding your bike with some friends make sure to travel in a single file line and leave about a metre space between yourself and the bike in front of you. If you are travelling at a high speed or zooming down a hill be sure to leave even more space as a precaution.

Youth under the age of 18 are also required to wear a helmet by law. If they are caught without one, their guardian will face an $80 fine.
