There is added meaning and urgency in this year's Terry Fox Walk at St. Mary's High School in Woodstock. Student Maddie McIntyre is recovering from a battle with Osteosarcoma, the same form of bone cancer that eventually claimed the life of the great Terry Fox. However, Student Council member Paul Minello says the reports the students are getting on McIntyre are much more encouraging. "She's currently recovering from her cancer. It's completely out of her system now, so now she's just in a stage where she's trying to get back on her feet and do the things she used to be able to do." Student Jamie VanVliet tells Heart FM it has definitely changed the feeling at the school about this year's event. "I think that before, it was just kind of a broad fundraiser for everyone, but now that we have someone that we know that is going through something like this, it kind of makes everyone more aware and really want to help her more and everyone else that's going through that." Student Councillor Alexis Ryan says it shows how much the students really do care for each other. "I think it brings everybody together and we know that we're all here for each other." The student body at St. Mary's is well on their way to hitting their fundraising goal of $3000 this year. One student came in with $400 in pledges alone.
