Teacher's idea prompts St. Pats Lent project charitable initiative
WOODSTOCK -- Students at St. Patrick's Catholic School in Woodstock are using their forty days of Lent to help out disadvantaged youth in other countries. It all started with a charitable idea from one of the school's teachers.
Tanya Wilson teaches Grades 4 and 5 at St. Patrick's and says the school is now collecting used soccer jerseys to send to other countries in need. Wilson says soccer jerseys aren't hard to part with for a lot of kids.
"In Woodstock, they don't re-use soccer jerseys, the kids get to keep them. A lot of times we have piles of them left over at home, so we decided to use that, because a lot of students here do play soccer."
Needing a suitable benefactor for the Lent drive, Wilson already had one country in mind for donations.
"Honduras was one of the places, because we have a friend on my team who does already bring stuff to Honduras. But we're also looking at other places and connections that they can go to."
Jerseys aren't the only items up for donation. Other items which can be included are matching socks or even deflated soccer balls.
In addition to those items -- and all used soccer jerseys collected, Wilson says small cash donations are also being accepted as well to help out with shipping costs. The drive unofficially wraps up just before Easter weekend on April 18th -- though some late donations will also be accepted after the holiday.
Anyone with a used youth soccer jersey looking to donate can do so by dropping off your jersey or cash donation at St. Patrick's School at 344 Parkinson Road. Donations are also being accepted at Cowan Park Soccer Complex located at 895 Ridgewood Drive in Woodstock.
