Stop the Violence

November is Violence Against Women Awareness and Prevention Month

Shocking statistics show that 51 percent of Canadian women have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16.

Those are stats are coming out as part of Violence Against Women Awareness and Prevention Month which is one now.

Coordinator and Neighbours, Friends and Family Coordinator Linda Armstrong says anyone out there being victimized needs to realize that the Oxford County community does support them.

"And we want to get the message to anyone who might be an offender. You know, you offended, okay that's what you did but there are resources out there to help the offenders so don't throw the offenders under the bus. We are here to help everybody and it's a message I think that's important to give."

Armstrong says talking to youth about violence is extremely important so children know violence does happen even if it's not something they have experienced in their lifetime.

"And if it's a non-issue then why am I going to talk about it and why am I going to change anything and if my friend is really wicked with his girlfriend why am I going to step up and go, wow man you shouldn't do that. For me it's not an issue, mom and dad get along beautifully. I haven't experienced it. What are you talking about violence against women, what is that?"

"Violence has different forms. Yes there's the obvious, the bruises, the broken limbs but there's also the psychological, the emotional, the spiritual. There's so many different forms of violence against women, we're not just talking about domestic violence."

Several community events are being organized to bring awareness to these issues and offer the community an opportunity to show their support.
