A woman from Stratford has fallen victim to a popular scam using Google Play Cards and Publisher's Clearing House.
STRATFORD - Stratford Police are warning the public about a fraud using Google Play cards.
Several residents have called police about the scam. On Wednesday a woman told police that she was contacted by someone who claimed to be one of her childhood friends. The fraudster said he had just won a prize through Publisher's Clearing House and convinced the woman to contact Publishers Clearing House to try and win money herself.
The woman contacted the number provide and was told she needed to pay up front fees, using Google Play cards to claim her prize. The woman followed through with the instructions and subsequently lost an
undisclosed amount of money.
The Stratford Police wish to remind the public that no legitimate company will request payment in order for you to claim a prize, nor will any company ask to be paid with Google Play cards. It is suggested that you do your research if you are contacted by anyone offering you a prize; slow down, do a search on the Internet and make phone calls yourself to ask questions.
Most importantly, if it sounds too good to be true, it likely is!
If you have suffered a financial loss in regards to this Publisher's Clearing House fraud, or any other fraud, please contact the Stratford Police Service at 519-271-4141 to make a report. If you have been contacted and are not out any money, please contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
