Summer Safety Tips from Oxford County Animal Rescue

The Oxford County Animal Rescue is reminding dog owners out there to never leave their furry friends in a hot vehicle and to be cautious while walking them in the summer months.

OXFORD COUNTY - Now that we're starting to experience that warm summer weather, the Oxford County Animal Rescue has some tips for dog owners.

You shouldn't leave your dog outside for long periods of time in the afternoon hours and you definitely should not leave them in a vehicle on a hot day. Foster Coordinator Anna Holmes tells about some of the signs that your dog could be in distress.

"If they are panting a lot, if they are drooling, if their gums are pale, if they are lethargic and their eyes don't look right they are in trouble and they need to get somewhere cooler, get some water and perhaps even a visit to the vet would be in order."

If you spot a pet in distress in a hot vehicle, Holmes says you should call police and go into the nearby store to try to find the owner.

She says it's best to leave your dog at home in the air conditioning or with a fan. You should also make sure they have some water to stay hydrated.

Holmes adds should also be careful if you want to take them out for a walk on a hot day.

"If you take your shoe and sock off, put your foot down on the cement and you can't hold it there for longer than three seconds, imagine what it feels like on your dog's feet."

Hot sidewalks or asphalt can easily burn the pads of their feet.
