SWPH Offers Second Dose Guidance for Residents Who Received AstraZeneca

Southwestern Public Health is offering recommendations to local residents who received a first dose of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine.

SOUTHWESTERN PUBLIC HEALTH - Southwestern Public Health is offering recommendations to residents who received a first dose of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine.

Ontario is no longer offering AstraZeneca for first doses, however people can still get it for a second dose, if they received AstraZeneca for their first dose.

Ontarians are also eligible to mix doses and receive Moderna or Pfizer as their second dose. Local Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joyce Lock says these second dose options will be provided only after the recommended 12-week interval.

“If you received a first dose of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine from a pharmacy or from a family health care provider, they will provide you with your second dose 12 weeks after the first. A second dose of AstraZeneca or of an mRNA vaccine like Pfizer or Moderna will ensure you have strong protection against the virus. Both will count as a completed vaccine series."

If you have already booked a second dose at a pharmacy, no action is required. For those who do not have a second dose booked, your pharmacy will reach out to you to schedule your second dose appointment.

If you have questions about what second dose vaccine is right for you, or need to discuss this information further, please contact your doctor, nurse practitioner, or pharmacist before you book your vaccine appointment.
