Southwestern Public Health says you should hold off on getting any COVID-19 booster doses this summer, so you can receive the updated version of the vaccine this fall.
OXFORD COUNTY - COVID-19 is still a concern of Southwestern Public Health despite the pandemic being behind us.
An updated version of the vaccine is expected to be released this fall to hopefully provide protection against the XBB variant. That being said, Chief Nursing Officer Jaime Fletcher says people should hold off getting booster doses this summer.
"The thought from the Ministry and all of their advisors is that by receiving a booster dose this fall of COVID-19 vaccine, that'll happen at the time that respiratory season normally commenced and that having a booster dose in the fall will maximize the protection against COVID-19. Every individual would be eligible for a dose that would allow for six months to have passed since their last vaccine and six months since any confirmed COVID infection."
Southwestern Public Health is aiming to give boosters in October, the peak of flu season. They also want to emphasize that if a medical professional has advised getting a booster before October, you should not wait.
