SWPH has received its first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine that covers the XBB variant, and it's encouraging high-risk individuals to get the shot ASAP.
OXFORD/ELGIN/MIDDLESEX - Southwestern Public Health is setting aside its first doses of the latest COVID-19 vaccine for people who live or work as a caregiver in a long-term care home, retirement home, or a hospital.
The health unit received its first shipment of the vaccine that targets the XBB variant recently.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ninh Tran is encouraging high-risk individuals to get the shot as soon as they can.
"Cases are rising, outbreaks are rising, hospitalizations are rising. If you have a loved one in a long-term care, retirement home, or hospital setting, please speak to their health care provider about getting them vaccinated right away. This is also true if you work in one of those settings or function as a caregiver. The time is now."
The next shipment of the latest vaccine will be set aside for those who are pregnant, over the age of 60, or immune suppressed.
