Group hosting picket outside of Alexandra Hospital from 4-5pm
INGERSOLL - A group is gathering outside of Alexandra Hospital in Ingersoll demanding the preservation, restoration and improvement of services in rural hospitals.
Oxford Coalition for Social Justice Chair Bryan Smith says the sympathy picket is in support of two groups.
"First is the group of people who use or deliver health services in Ingersoll, in the same way as you know, people elsewhere in Oxford County. We have real concerns about the constant reductions in hospital and healthcare services."
The second group they are supporting is the Ontario Health Coalition who hope the new Minister of Health advocates for Health Care more vigorously than his predecessor.
"All across Ontario communities have got together and have done a ballot and said they want more public healthcare as opposed to private, and therefore costly healthcare. Today is the day that representatives from the Ontario Health Coalition are in fact presenting those to the new Minister of Health and saying ' how about working at making sure that health and home care are priorities'."
Smith says the message of today's picket is simple.
"Our community deserves rural hospitals with a wide range of healthcare in it that responds to the needs of people who live in our community."
Smith says the group will not be blocking anyone from going inside the hospital, they are simply showing their sympathies and offering support.
Anyone wishing to get involved can do so by visiting the Oxford Coalition for Social Justice website or by writing to their government representative or even the Minister of Health with their concerns.
The Ingersoll picket is expected to run today from 4-5pm.
