Taiwan Trip

A group of WCI students are preparing to travel to Taipei, Taiwan next month to see Oxford County's connection first hand.

WOODSTOCK - 17 high school students are set to get an experience of a lifetime.

On March 1st,  the Woodstock Collegiate Institute students will board a plane bound for Taipei, Taiwan to get a feel for a different culture all thanks to one individual over 140 years ago...Reverend George Mackay.

WCI Principal Chris Friesen says this area of Asia holds Oxford County in a special place.  "The area of Taipei they hold in very high regard this part of Canada just this part in Oxford County there is an interesting historical connection that has led to this opportunity."

WCI has been asked by Oxford County to become a twinned school for Tamkang High School in Taipei.  Friesen adds this will be a great experience for the students.

Nearly half of the cost for each student's trip has been covered by donors from Oxford County and this all started thanks to one man's mission back in the 1870's.

"Reverend George Mackay who grew up in Embro in the mid 1800's and would've gone to this school predating this high school and he went to Taiwan as a part of his missionary work and he created there churches, hospital, and school systems so he is quite revered."

They will spend 11 days in Asia before returning home.
