Violence against women is going to be front and centre in Ingersoll tonight. Take Back the Night will be taking place at Unifor Hall starting at 6:30 p.m.
INGERSOLL - Take Back the Night is back for another year in Oxford County.
This year's event will take place at the Unifor Hall in Ingersoll and the walk happen on Victoria Street starting at 6:30 p.m. tonight (Thursday, September 21st). The goal of the event is to raise awareness for violence against women.
Community Development Coordinator for the Domestic Abuse Resource Team Amy Maddess says the need for awareness is only growing in Oxford County.
"There's long wait lists for both shelters, so emergency shelters, as well as second stage housing. There is always long wait lines on our crisis line."
Maddess adds, there is a special focus for this year's walk.
"We are doing a dress code this year. It is not mandatory to adhere to, but it would be lovely if everyone could wear red just to acknowledge the disproportionate rates of violence experienced by missing and murdered Indigenous women."
After the walk, there will be a candlelight vigil.
