Students and staff at public schools in Ontario will soon have access to take-home PCR self-collections tests.
ONTARIO - Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced more testing options for students at all public schools across Ontario.
Students and staff will now have access to take-home PCR self-collections tests. The Province is also launching a new test-to-stay approach for asymptomatic, unvaccinated students. This will allow students to take rapid tests, to avoid missing school when their is a positive case in the classroom. Essentially the students will need to be tested every day to make sure they are not testing positive for COVID-19 during an outbreak.
The Province is also elevating the requirement for unvaccinated staff to undergo rapid antigen screening from home two to three times a week.
Right now over 83% of youth 12 plus in Ontario have received at least one dose of the vaccine and 77% are fully vaccinated.
Lecce says Ontario schools remain a safe place for our children to go every day.
"While Ontario schools are safer places to learn supported by enhanced ventilation and high vaccination rates, we are taking nothing for granted. By expanding access to testing and helping to better screen for COVID-19, we are protecting the progress we have made so far in keeping our schools safer for students and helping to limit disruption to the school year. These additional efforts build on the extensive safety protocols and investments we have made to protect schools, including the more than $600 million our government has provided to support ventilation improvements."
