Terry Fox Run

It's been 34 years since the first Terry Fox run began and the tradition continues on with runs in Woodstock and Tavistock.

WOODSTOCK -- The 34th Annual Terry Fox run will hit the streets this Sunday.

Organizer Bill Gillespie says their group will be out early in the morning mapping out the routes for participants ahead of the 10:00 am start time.  "We have a 1 kilometre walk, we have a 2.5 kilometre, we have a 5 kilometre and full 10-K.  Now the people that run the full 10-K can either loop the 5 twice or do the full 10.  The City of Woodstock has been very cooperative this year in that Dundas Street will be closed from Museum Square to Van Ave in both directions."

Gillespie says the registrations will open at 9:00 am in BDO parking lot on Graham Street in Woodstock but those who would like to head out before 10:00 am for the walk/run are welcomed to do so - he says the routes should be ready by 9:00.  The event wraps up at 2:00 pm.

"There's no registration fee, there never has been.  There's no minimum entry fee - you just come willing to participate in the spirit of Terry Fox and we'll be glad to accommodate you.  The key point is numbers; numbers will generate enthusiasm, enthusiasm will generate dollars some times and all the money goes to cancer research."

Gillespie points out that 84-cents of every dollar raised goes back to research.

This year, 45 countries worldwide will participate in the Terry Fox Run with 800 runs taking place in Ontario alone.
