Oxford Public Health are raising awareness of the dangers of radon gas in the home.
Oxford Public Health are encouraging residents to test their homes for the second leading cause of lung cancer in Canada.
Radon; a colourless, odourless, radioactive gas was detected in over 8 percent of Ontario homes tested by Health Canada. In Oxford County, 12 of 104 homes tested came back with radon concentrations above the guideline of 200 becquerels per cubic metre
Program Supervisor of Health protection, Peter Heywood says Public Health are recommending local residents test their homes. "Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that causes lung cancer. It occurs naturally as a decay product of uranium and it can be found in a soil, rock or groundwater. Radon gas enters your home through cracks and other openings and it can some times accumulated to elevated levels in enclosed spaces like your home where it could present a health risk with long term exposure."
The winter months are the best time to perform the tests in your home and you can purchase a home kit through local retailers.
Heywood suggests doing the tests in the lowest lived area in your home. That would be the lowest level in the house where your family spends at least four hours of the day.
