Classes will continue to be offered at the Tillsonburg Community Centre and Lake Lisgar Waterpark.
TILLSONBURG - The Town of Tillsonburg had to reduce swimming programming at the Community Centre, so Lake Lisgar Waterpark could open.
The Town is only able to offer group swimming lessons for preschoolers and level 1, 2, and 3 swimmers this summer due to the ongoing lifeguard and aquatic instructor shortage. The classes are available at the Tillsonburg Community Centre and some of them are also being offered at the waterpark.
Mayor Stephen Molnar says public pools across the country have been feeling the effects of the lifeguard and aquatic instructor shortage.
"In order to open Lake Lisgar Waterpark, staff suggested reducing programming at the indoor pool during the summer season. While not ideal, it’s the best option we have at this time."
Julie Columbus, the Director of Recreation, Culture, and Parks, says many lifeguards quit their jobs during the pandemic and COVID restrictions also affected new lifeguard training.
“During the past two years, we weren’t able to operate the courses that are critical to getting young people certified, trained, and ready to become lifeguards. Many existing lifeguards were also unable to be re-certified."
The families affected by the reduced programming have already been notified. Credits have been issued to those who have already paid for lessons.
